Here comes another GMC Sierra Custom Headlight Project! This one is another great project with the help of Kendall Auto Mall here in Idaho...these guys truly like to offer their clients something only a select dealerships can get nationwide. Started with a 2017 GMC Denali 2500HD...so the headlights are already better than most....but not quite show-room-ready....that's where we come in. Blew the OEM headlights apart Ripped out the factory Amber and Clear Lenses Painted everything Gloss Black Upgraded the lenses with Klearz Smoked Triple Lenses Upgraded the OEM White DRL LEDs to a Switchback Version via Diode Dynamics Upgraded the OEM Turn Signal to a Switchback Version via Diode Dynamics Installed a Triple RGBWtf Rainbow Unicorn Demon Eye via ACL These will look good on their showroom truck until one lucky customer decides to purchase it! This bad truck will have a massive lift, huge wheels and tires and a slew of other modifications....so make sure to go down and check it out! Here we have a 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 a client brought in with some parts he purchased from another parts store and needed them installed.
Here is what we installed: 2.5 King Coilovers with Reservoirs Upper Control Arms KMC Robby Gordon Wheels General Tires Removed Rear Blocks Here are just a few of the reasons someone would want to do a setup like this: 1. Lightweight hard anodized 6063 aluminum alloy reservoirs dissipate heat quickly and will not rust due to gas charging contamination. 2. High quality fittings are mated to Aeroquip high pressure hoses which resist abrasion and kinking. 3. Internally threaded top cap design threads over the shock body to enable maximum piston travel inside the shock body. 4. 2.5" Shock cylinders are precision bored to within +/- .001, then honed after cadmium plating to remove buildup for a tight piston seal and optimum valving function. 5. Coilover shocks are machined with our own truncated thread design for ultimate strength and trouble free spring preload and height adjustments. 6. Pinch bolt coil adjuster nut offers superior clamping force to retain your coil preload adjustments without crushing the threads like set screw style collars do. 7. The heat treated 6061 aluminum alloy piston has our highly developed port configurations that contribute to the unique damping performance and famous King ride quality. 8. Wear bands are made from a Rulon composite that offers incredible wear resistance, low deformation under load and high compressive strength. Overlapping end design enhances sealing. 9. Large 3/4" or 7/8" diameter shafts have a minimum tensile strength of 100,000 pounds per square inch. They are hard chromed and micro-polished to a 6 RA finish for extended seal life. 10. High strength rod end designed for proper clearance on your application. Steel Teflon lined spherical bearings for smooth articulation and long life with no metal to metal contact. 11. Aluminum components and vehicle specific mounts are machined from aircraft quality billet. Front and rear kits all include all necessary vehicle specific mounting brackets and hardware along with detailed installation instructions. Technical support, if needed, is only a phone call or email away. Here we have a brand new 2017 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition in for some cosmetic upgrades.....definitely a case were even the smallest mods can change the look of a truck completely.
First we tinted the windows all around...this not only gives the truck a more blacked out look; but blocks out harmful sun rays and keeps the interior Cold/Hot depending on the time of year. Next we removed as much chrome stuff as possible on the truck.....Bumpers, Mirror Covers, handles and more......shipped those off for paint and they returned with that OEM-Matched paint quality our clients have come to love....they look like they came that way from the factory and makes this truck look stealthy as all get-up. Next....the bigger, non-factory looking mod.....Nice and beefy Rigid Industries Grill with a single 20" LED light bar and 2 accompanying LED Cube pods. Again....all black to match the theme...but now the owner has more lighting to help see at night and off-road if necessary. After all of that we had our buddies over at Tough Liner shoot some fresh bedliner to help protect the bed and make everything look stealthy! Next up will hopefully be some custom headlight for this...because those chrome uglies need to go now! Don't forget, if you can think of something you want done but just not sure where to go....just hit us up.....we can do just about anything for you and your vehicles!! Client brought in his 2017 Chevy Colorado for some tech updates.
The ZR2 Package doesn't have any convenience features that he desperately needed....so Trax Customs was there to help out. First things first...he couldn't see at night....so we upgraded the OEM Halogen lights to 5000k 35 watt HID lighting from Morimoto. These pair perfectly with the OEM Projectors and provide plenty of light output for much safer nighttime driving. Next was the fact that the customer was worried about backing out of spots and not being able to see obstructions that weren't in his factory backup camera.....so we added ultra-sonic reverse sensors into his bumper. These weren't too difficult to make look factory, the matte black sensors paired up perfectly with the matte black bumper. Then I installed an audible/visual display up on his dash so that he can get within 12" of an obstacle and know exactly, down to the inch, where he is at. He'll be back for more in the near future! As many of you may or may not know....I was burned last year by the SEMA headlight build I did for a local dealership.....which, has made me rethink future sponsorships locally and globally.
I really wasn't sure I wasn't to do another SEMA build, especially after last year....but this one was special.....it wasn't for the same dealership....so I said yes. My only stipulation was that I wanted to only to builds that were TRULY unique. Something that might change the game a bit. The plan with this build was to do something that has never been done before on the platform that was presented.....a 2016 Dodge Ram Megacab. I wanted to get JW Speaker to send me some Motorcycle LED Headlight pods and I was going to retrofit them into the housings to give them maximum performance and maximum show-style that I've never seen on a Dodge headlight........well...since I was approached in the end of September to do this, we missed the deadline to get the JW sponsorship by a matter of weeks....they are still sending us the products and want to see the project completed...because after hearing my plans, the owner of JW Speaker wanted his Dodge headlights done the exact same way.....funny how truly unique builds can sell themselves once their full potential is met. The owner of this truck had already picked up a few sponsors for the build to just do a basic retrofit....Diode Dynamics sent Switchback LED Halos and Strips specific to the Dodge headlight, as well as RGBWA Switchback LED DRL Boards and RGBW Demon Eyes. Then we got Klearz manufacturing to send us some Frosted DRL Lenses with Frosted Side Marker Lenses as well. So, Plan B was to implement all of these products into the build at the VERY last minute if the JW products didn't show up....which they didn't. I had the local badass Ryan Lewin paint the interior parts factory White and Cobalt Candy Blue. I assembled all the internal LEDs and wired everything up to make install on the truck (that was still being assembled in another shop a few days before shipping off to Vegas) a snap. I had a few extra RGB LEDs so I wired up up behind the Frosted Side Market lens to add even more Multi-Color lighting to the mix to make them stand out. Once everything was sealed up and ready to go, I had them installed on the truck in under an hour to help relieve some stress on the owner/builder. The amount of light these put off in the White and Amber switchback mode is unreal.....then when you kick on the RGBW accent lighting, these really pop! This will be in the SOTA wheel booth in the Upper South hall at the SEMA Convention in Las Vegas October 30th through November 3rd; if you happen to be down there. As for the intended Mega-Build....once I receive the JW Speaker parts, I will be rebuilding his other headlights and making some ripples in the truck market! Return Instagram Client needed to add even more lighting to his already badass GMC Sierra SLE Truck....so he wanted to upgrade his OEM mirrors.
Easier said than done. First...he needed Trax's help in creating some switchback LED mirrors with smoked lenses to match the theme he's got. Next....which turned out to be the difficult part, was to get them installed on his truck. Since this client lives in Texas, All I could do was make sure these were as Plug-n-Play as possible for a normal truck with LED Mirrors already. Knowing that his truck wouldn't have the correct wiring for these to simply plug in and function as they should, there was a ton of back-n-forth on coordinating how these were to be wired. Basically, they needed to run a Parking Light and Turn Signal circuit up into each door....which sucks....but not too horrible of a job for what the outcome of the lighting/product is. All in all, this was a much needed upgrade on his truck...now he's got fully functional tow mirrors with bright AF switchbacks to match his headlights! This was a fun one.
We literally went over to a good buddies place of employment and stole his truck. Good thing he's fairly predictable, because we knew EXACTLY where he parked and that he leaves his keys in the truck (it's locked with key-code access only). So after we hocked that beast from a public parking lot, we took it over to our shop and lifted it 2" for a surprise birthday present from his wife. Afterwards, we neatly placed it back into the same spot....made sure the radio station was set to his favorite Mexican channel (Oley!) and left before anyone suspected anything! Guess he was on the phone when he got into his truck an didn't notice anything...until the Mexican music started playing (which we suspect he started dancing and singing because it's his favorite music).....he then noticed a few other things....like some balloons that had magically appeared in his truck.....then he got out and noticed the truck was sitting JUUUUST a touch higher than normal! BOOM.....Gootteeeem! Happy Birthday MMFB!!! Here we have a clients 2015 Ford F150 Eco-Boost Lariat truck that came in for some Visual or Go-Fast parts.
First off, we Leveled this beast with a 2" Leveling kit, then we slammed come 20"x10" Cali Off-Road Wheels and wrapped em with 305/55/20 Amp All-Terrain rubbers. Then we threw on an S&B Intake to help it breath and made sure it could figure out what to do with all that new incoming air we put on an Edge Evo H2 Tuner...then on the back end we installed an MBRP 3" Exhaust. This thing is throaty, quick and looks like it should have from the factory! Client brought in his 2017 Dodge Ram projector headlights for a bit of a visual and performance boost.
He didn't want to go too crazy on these...just wanted them to be a step-up from what Dodge did....with the potential to upgrade in the future. We swapped the Amber lens on the side for a DK Mouldz Clear lens; which made the like look completely different but with a very subtle change. Then we swapped the OEM Amber-only DRL/Turn-Signal boards to the Diode Dynamics White/Amber Switchback LED Boards....so now he'll be one of the few Idahoans running around with White Lower LEDs while everyone else is rockin' Amber. Something only Dodge guys will notice; but they'll all envy when they see it! Busted these out for a client in California really quick while he was on vacation.
He sent me his GMC Sierra headlights and unfortunately one of the mounting tabs broken due to improper packing methods....but I repaired that enough for him to be able to mount it again. This was a fairly simple mod....consisting of a Full Black Internal Paint job and Switchback LED Turn Signals. The owner then painted his front chrome grill black to make a very dramatic difference! Client dropped of his truck, since he's usually out-of-state working.....which gave me enough time to squeeze in this build.
He purchased the truck from someone that previously installed these lights as well as a bunch of other items....all of which never quite functioned normally.....so the first round of fixes for Trax Customs was Custom Lights and Performance Chip. The Chip, which owner attempted to install, needed to be rebooted from the manufacturer (Bully Dog) and then needed some coaxing to get it installed correctly.....but we knocked that out for him no problem. Next...the lights.......welp, the aftermarket junk that was installed, was not installed correctly and always gave him problems.....again, someone buying something off of Shamazon and not doing research and figuring out what was needed to make it work properly. Here is what I did: Morimoto 35w 5500k HID Sysem with MOPAR Bi-Xenon Heavy Duty Relay Harness Bi-Xenon Projectors with 'Trax' etched on Clear Lens White Panamera Switchback LED Shroud Black Internals Custom Black/White Painted Dodge Ram Logo on amber lens ACME Black-Series Switchback Turn Signals bulbs Had some new clients bring in their massive Camper/Truck for some upgrades right before their bomber-trip to go pick up their new boat they purchased 3/4s the way across the United States....and we only had a few days to bust it out for them.
They've owned this setup for over 6 years, and throughout that time, they have had some issues with the existing equipment that was wired into it. Existing Equipment: Rear Add-A-Bag Air Suspension with Manual Tee Fill-up OEM Satellite Radio (never got reception due to Camper) Backup-Camera that Never worked New Hotness: On-Board Air-Lift Heavy Duty Compressor with Automagical Fill Pioneer Bluetooth Touchscreen Multi-Media Unit in-dash Backup Camera wired on TOP of Rear camper for Boat Monitoring Satellite Radio Antenna wired on TOP of Camper So....as you can imagine, the backup camera and sat radio antenna had to be re-wired and lengthened due to the massiveness of this beast....so I had to extend each cable (which sucks because they are both sensitive cables to begin with) and then fought the battle fishing these wires from atop the Camper, through existing-ish channels inside the camper, then underneath the beast all the way to the front. There were plenty of curse words used and plenty of blood drawn....but we finally got it wired up. Customer had all his Auxiliary Switches un-used from factory, so I tapped into Switch #4, since it's the least amp output, so now he can turn on his rear camera whenever he wants....super convenient. The Sat radio now has no issues connection because it's the highest thing on the vehicle with no obstructions. The new Pioneer unit gives them multiple inputs, including Bluetooth, Auxiliary and USB....so their roadtrips will be full of music and books-on-tape. The Air Lift compressor upgrade went smoothly as well....the old system was antiquated and was super inconvenient for the owner....now at the press of a button, he can raise or lower the rear whenever he wants. We installed the gauge and remote fill buttons in the center console/dash area. This was a bomber install, as we only had a week to get parts and install before they left....but also, both Ryan and myself were leaving town a few days before these owners left as well....so we busted it out and everyone was happy! Returning Client brought in his beautifully restored 1972 Chevrolet C-20 Pickup Truck. This beast is wicked.....only thing it needed to finish it off was a nice stereo system....which entailed quite the list:
Retrosounds Hermosa Motor2 Bluetooth Headunit Retrosounds Din-Repair Kit with custom faceplace and knobs Retrosounds Quadraphonic 4 Ch Amplifier Retrosounds 8" Powered Subwoofer Retrosounds 6.5" Coaxial Speakers Retrosounds Chevy 6.5" Kick Panel Adapters Retrosounds Hide-away Amplified FM Antenna First things first, the previous owner had cut in a DIN style radio and removed the old radio with the knobs...which isn't necessarily a problem....especially now that they make face plates to cover them up....though not as nice looking as if the knob cutouts were still there....but the faceplate matches perfectly with the existing dash in the truck. The Hermosa radio gives you everything you'd need in a classic truck like this; Am, FM, (2) Aux Inputs, USB and Bluetooth. I installed the Bluetooth cable into the glove box without cutting any holes anywhere. Next in line is the Quadraphonic 4x45 Amplifier that's got a nice hide-away design. Made some custom brackets to mount it behind the radio, up and out of the way and tuned it so the customers gets clear highs and mids at all volumes. That powers the new 6.5" speakers in the kicks and the existing speakers in the dash....which when setup with a high-pass crossover filter, these work together as a quasi component system. To fill in the bass, the 8" powered subwoofer fit under the bench seat without a single issue and provides plenty of bass in this single cabin area. There is a bass-knob I put under the key solenoid so that his keys will hide the fact that he's got bumps underneath until he turns it up. Final Thoughts: Without going completely aftermarket with no budget, this Retrosounds package is exactly what music should sound like at the budget range you're in. Yes, it could sounds better....but it could definitely sound worse as well. If you want really good sound and have it look like it came that way from the factory, then this is the route I'd suggest. These things are starting to pick up more popularity....as I figured they would. Here we have a set of 2016 GMC Sierra SLE headlights. (first image is from my last set showing me cutting out the plastic areas) Most owner want the looks and performance of the SLT headlights, but the costs sometimes do not justify the 'meh' results. The OEM DRLs are only white and the projectors are only 25w units. This setup is a classic conversion.....using the OEM HID Projectors out of an SLT unit and then custom fabricating in the Upper and Lower DRL units using Smoked Lenses from Klearz, Switchback Strips from Diode Dynamics, Switchback Bulbs from Diode and custom panels created in house. Simple enough in design, but the look it gives is what most are searching for! \/ \/ Photos from Owner @kylefitzgibbon_ \/ \/This has been an interesting journey to say the least.
I purchased an OEM set of lights that had been previously modified from another builder in California...because....it's for a Sierra...there are a ton of truck owners out here....these will sell quick. WRONG-OOO! I knew these were SLE headlights; meaning they Did NOT come with the upper and lower DRL LEDs....which is fine...that's only for looks....these were meant for better lighting performance. They previously had the old crappy projector ripped out and a new mini d2s projector installed. I upgraded the lighting to HIDs and replaced the turn signal for a switchback version and called it a day. Failing to realize that most guys that own the 1500 sierra's don't really wanna mod their lights or pay close to a grand for something they might not understand what they were getting....I mean, at my price, these were a steal for what the owner was getting.....cool looking modded lights and MUCH higher performance than even the 2017 Denali 2500 Sierras.....but nooooooo....not one bite on these. So, after talking with a potential buyer, I realized I need to do something that (I think) has never been done......and SLE to SLT conversion. Here is the justification: SLE Headlights $600-$800 for a pair SLT Headlights $800-1600 EACH SLT uprades: Basic White DRL boards and 25w D5S Bi-Xenon Projectors So, if I could take a set of SLE headlights and keep them under $1000-1500 for the set and make them better than the SLT version....then owners of the SLE platform will want to upgrade their existing lights to be better than the SLT owners. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! One thing I failed to realize when I jumped at this chance....the Upper and Lower panels of the SLE headlight shroud are actually molded in. To me, it'd be smart to make 1 mold of the lights and then create removable blank panels for either the SLT or SLE versions...but noooooo...GM had a different idea. So I had to actually very carefully cut out the upper and lower portions of the shroud to fit the clear lenses I saved from a prior build. Once that was done, I used some Diode Dynamics Switchback HD LED Strips for the upper and lower DRLs. Then, i mounted some RGB led strips in both upper and lower sections for the Tri-Demon Eyes.....as well as the projector to complete the trifecta. I had to make custom backboards for the lower drl section, because it'd show too much of the inner headlight compartment...and that'd be lame. While these LEDs might not project as far as the OEM SLT DRLs would....they are far superior to in ALL other aspects and angles. As soon as you move from the front of the headlights, the SLT LEDs dim...because they have forward firing LED reflector buckets.....these HD LED Strips however emit a constant bright light at all angles, front, side, top and bottom. Wrapped up...it'll be hard for most people to tell a difference in these First Ever SLE-to-SLT conversions.....but once they do recognize them, the'll still be as jealous as ever and what a set for themselves! Er...well....that's the plan anyways! Client brought in his GMC Sierra for a Lumen-bump!
He'd received all these light bars as a present and wanted to get them installed. Here is what he brought to the table: 50" LED bar 20" LED Bar 3" LED Cube X 4 I knew what he needed so I got him the necessary parts to fit the truck....which were the GMC Specific Roof Mount Brackets and Front Bumper Brackets...all from Rough Country. Original goal was to put 2 of the front cubes in the side mirror gaps...but because of how big the pods were and how they mounted; it just wasn't possible without them looking ghetto...so I tossed two of them into the center grill area...then bolted up the lower one centered in the bumper gap and then wrestled the top bar into place....all of which were powered via a single switch inside the cabin. The other 2 pods were used as backup assist lights when reversing...and WOW, did they help...soo much light when you slam that beast into reverse! Overall....I'm not a fan of roof-mount bars....but when someone wants it added, i'll gladly offer my expertise and get these installed properly and ensure year of usability.... He's got plenty of light for open-road driving now...which is the main goal and he was happy with the outcome. Hopefully we'll see this truck back for even more upgrades! This was a fun dual project for us here at Trax Customs.
A Local Military gentleman brought in his 2013 Dodge Ram pickup with product he previously purchased and needed help installing it. He purchased a new Kenwood headunit, a Pioneer Amplifier and Dual Ported Kicker Subwoofers. He also wanted his window tinted....so we both knocked out everything he needed and finished it just in time of him getting off duty at the end of the day. We'll hopefully be doing more to this truck in the near future! Had a pretty unique opportunity to work on a couples truck and RV.....normally this would be quite the hassle for a client.....they wanted to upgrade their old system in an older diesel truck as well as their camping RV......now most shops would have you bring them down to work on them....which is ok...but such a hassle sometimes.
Luckily for Trax Customs.....we are mobile.....so I picked up their truck for them....worked on it...brought it back and then worked on their RV AT their house......customer service baby! Truck: Had an existing Pioneer Premier installed....so I replaced it with a Pioneer Fold-Out DVD player so he can use his new backup camera to help him hook up to his RV! Then I replaced all the speakers in the truck with Pioneer Front Speakers as well as Rear Speakers in Bedliner Boxes so they can take them out and listen to music when they camp. RV: Replaced the 4 ceiling speakers with Pioneer Marine speakers and then fabricated a custom faceplate to replace the old/massive FM headunit with a newer Pioneer unit. Fun project we put together for a friend of ours.
Wife wanted to surprise her husband for their 15th Wedding Anniversary....."Nothing says 'thanks for putting up with me for 15 years' better than some custom work on a man's truck, correct?" Here is what we did for this 2015 Ford F150 Platinum: 4" Rough Country Suspension lift 33" Fuel Gripper Tires 20"x9" Fuel Maverick Wheels Pretty simple modification since this is our bread/butter...but the challenge was to hide all of this from the husband. Once he was out of town, we stole his truck, brought it 2 hours away from where they live....modded the truck and returned it for the big reveal. It's situations like this that we really enjoy making a plan come together to help people out....but it's what separates us from other shops that would make you bring them your vehicle or jump through hoops. Let us know what we can do to help you surprise your loved one in the future! Clients found us online and thought they'd give us a try because of our stellar online ranking.
They were relieved to see we stood up to what others have already known. First project was a 98 Ford F250 Diesel truck. Had an existing Pioneer Premier headunit installed but everything else just wasn't up to snuff....and the pioneer was showing it's age. So I replaced it with a 7" Fold-out DVD player with BT, USB and Backup Camera for when he hooks up to his RV. Then I replaced the front OEM speakers with Memphis Audio 5x7 Speakers and Rear JVC 6x9s in Custom Bedliner Boxes....with enough wire so they can be relocated outside of the truck if the couple wasn't to jam out to some tunes outside of the truck. Next up after that was the RV aforementioned above. It had a very dated AM/FM/Cassette receiver powering some old 6.5" ceiling mount speakers. I replaced all the speakers with Pioneer Marine speakers and fabricated a new face plate to house the new Pioneer BT/Aux/USB headunit. Now they have plenty of inputs and power to have a party anytime/anywhere. Buddy of ours that owns a local Bed-Liner Company brought in his 2006 Chevy 1500 for some much needed suspension work. His truck was dope before....but just needed something a bit different to really stand out....this will be a two-part build....first up:
6 inch lift kit 33" fuel mt gripper tires 2" spacers in the rear This really changed the look of the truck and gives it the stance it needed. Next up.....custom headlights/running lights.... Client brought in his Silverado for a much needed light upgrade...but for safety reasons mainly. He drives up to Alaska in the Spring and Returns in the Fall...and he's had WAY too many close encounters of the Wild-Kind....so he wanted to be able to see the animals wayyyy before he needs to apply the brakes. He wanted as much forward lighting as possible...but while staying as concealed (anti-theft) and un-obtrusive as possible. So....I knew right away my Baja Designs Onyx-6 30" High-Powered Series bar was the way to go. This is no small bar....but it's small enough to be crammed into his grill area. Fabricated a custom bracket and wired everything up to a switch on his dash. Now, at the flick of the switch, he should be able to spot a moose/bear/deer/Canadians at about a MILE range.....pretty impressive, eh?!?! Got this sweet 2016 Ford F150 in this week and we did some upgrades to it.
We'll be tackling the lighting and some other custom mods in the future. Here is what we did: 6 inch lift 35" Nitto ridge grapplers tires 20x10 fuel vapor wheels Paint to match fender flares Friend of ours brought in his new truck for some upgrades!
These are fundamental mods that can completely change the look/feel of your new truck without going completely overboard. Here's what we installed: 5 inch lift kit Fox 2.0 reservoir shocks 35" fuel gripper MT tires 20x10 fuel 2 piece maverick wheels. 4" Flopro exhaust Efi live tuning Tinted windows Kicker VSS subwoofer system |
