Started construction on the subwoofer box....this one is gonna be something I don't think I've seen before.....going to be a pretty cool shape from looking at it in the trunk, but also, as you can see by the 'tombstone' shape in the rear, will have a plexiglas window that will show off the magnet, but you'll only be able to see it from inside the cab, looking through the rear seat center arm rest opening....pretty trick!!

Was unusually cold in the garage tonight, so the fiberglass took FOREVER to kick....I even mixed it at 5% MEKP...oh well. Sub box base is done and ready for layout, threw some filler on the beauty panels and will sand them lightly before I put them back in for test fit.
Sub box building tomorrow! Removed the stock Rockford Fosgate amplifier under the driver seat and replaced that with a custom panel to house the escort radar system main hub. Hide all the wires that will power that, now, as you can see, all those little ports need to be filled....so that will be next!
You can see the stock amp is no match for what we're putting in the Evo...should be enough to make some noise! Cut out some 3/4" MDF and routed the edges so that it can sit flush inside the mold.....placed everything in the Evo, made sure it was level, then applied some glass and fiberglass strands to bond the wood to the wheel well mold.....once this dries, then I can pull it, fill the voids and glass a few layers and then I can start final construction on the subwoofer box. Pulled all the molds and got them trimmed up and ready to go.
Taped off the sides and made a beauty panel, that will replace the stock panel that hid the battery and washer fluid resevoir. Glassed the sides to match existing contours and now we just have a few more layers to go, then we'll be good to go there. Also, cleaned up the door panels and get them ready to cut and fit the new speakers on them as well. Did a mobile install tonight....integrated a Sound Ordenance 8" powered woofer into a stock JBL system on a 91 Ford Explorer. I'm still very impressed with how these little guys sound, and at only $150 for the subwoofer/amp combo...the price can not be beat!
Here's a pic of my car LOADED to the top....and the cool LEDs that come on when your sub turns on! Parents brought me a bunch of stuff from the old house I lived in back in high school...dug deep and found some fiberglass mat.....the same roll I started using when I was teaching myself fiberglass....blast from the past for sure!!! So I threw two layers on and let them dry overnight.
Next.....drill holes for the T-Nuts, glass those in, then pop the mold for construction! Also, I can now pop the mold for the subwoofer box and trim that up, and start construction on that badboy!! Still in the works with the owner, but here is an upcoming project.
The Brewforia BrewMobile!! Deck with iPod controls, aux inputs, and HD radio. Component speakers custom installed Custom center console subwoofer box, with memphis audio subwoofer and amp. Should be a good one!!! Got a call from a father who tried to install a system for his son's birthday. Jeep Liberty...which means Infinity system. So, I hurried over after work, put his Sound Ordenance speakers, power 8" woofer (that hit by the way) and Kenwood CD player in.
Not bad for a few hours job. So, got the trunk taped off and ready for some resin, but I need more supplies. Tin Foil is on top of the list, then we'll be ready to go!!!
Also, started thinking about the other parts of the car that are fiberglass (door panels) and so I attempted to tap those off...well, I need wax and adhesive remover, as SOMEONE has been Armor-All'ing their doors, so tap won't stick. So tomorrow I'll run to the store and pick up the necessary cooking supplies to start glass!! Cheers So work has finally begun!! Owner will be pleased!
Was a busy day today. Got his new drifting rims with high performance proxy TR5 summer tires ordered; and since he's going to be in snow this winter, I also got him some high performance winter tires to go on his stock rims. Tore apart the back trunk area to figure out the layout of the subs/amps back there. Have a few concept ideas that I sent to the owner, so we'll see if he likes them. Also started some removal and sound deadening. Only in the trunk, but that's the largest area. This trunk is kind of funky, so it's going to take a little longer than usually. Got about 75% done in the trunk last night.....not bad for an hours work. Keep posted! Got a 2010 Malibu in today.
Simple amp and sub install. Tricky part was that it's Bose......no biggy though. Orion Cobalt dual 10" subs, in dual 10" box Orion Cobalt 500 watt mono amplifier with bass knob Install when simple, since it's pretty much the exact same car as the 06' Grand Prix I did yesterday. Bumped pretty good, and complimented the Bose system perfectly. Almost done with the new shop test bench setup. The old one worked fine, for the area I had in the old shop, but with more room, I'm going horizontal rather than vertical.
Plus, with this new setup, my test speakers (Arc Audio KS 6009 components) will have more airspace, thus sounding more nartural. Once complete, I'll be able to test 12volt products such as CD Players, HID lights, LEDs, and much more. Test Amps; either 2 channel, 4 channel, or mono, all without unplugging anything from the back of the display anymore. This is how it should be done. Back to building! Started planning Project Evo tonight. Figured out a few locations for the amps, layout in the trunk and areas where all the gadgets and gizmo's will go. Trying to stuff a DVD player with nagivation, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio, and iPod hookups into a dash and throughout the car. Plus the addition of all the components for the high-end radar detector. Also, the amps and everything need a home in the rear! I think some metal is going to be in order!
Rewired the Arc KS 300.4 to run the fronts and a little 10" JL sub on the rear channels. This thing is now complete....finally. This is one good sounding Tacoma. All it needed was a little bass. We'll see what happens when the owner gets back. I see an Arc XXD 1500 in it's near future.
Owner is leaving out of town for at least a month, and has decided to add some bass before he takes off. We'll be taking the rear channel speakers off the amp and hooking up a little JL sub. The Arc Audio KS 300.4 will handle the front stage and subwoofer without even flinching. Stay tuned for pics and customer's response. Should sounde amazing with all the sound deadening and products we have in there already.
Finished up Arc Yoda last night. Swapped out the old Hifonic amp to a new XXD Digital Mono amp, and wired the subs (which we put in a new, bigger box) to 1 ohm, so they are both seeing the full potential. System sounds great, footprint of the amps are way smaller than what he had before, and they look great too. All in all, the customer is happy, and I'm sure we'll be seeing him back for more.
Arc Amps Installed Arc Amps Lit up The last of the parts came in yesterday, so tonight I'll be finishing up the Arc Yoda. Loading the woofers in a bigger, better box. Installing an XXD mono amp to supply the woofers the power they crave. Installing crossovers and tweeters with the rear speakers. Should do the job! Stay tuned!
Everything for project Evo has arrived. All the fiberglass material, wires, DVD player with navigation, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio, backup camera. 1000 watt amp, 400 watt 4 channel amp, 12" crazy subwoofer, sound deadening to make sure nothing rattles. This is going to be a gnarly build; now that everything is here, guess I should be working and not typing!
Got a sweet JVC touchscreen DVD player for Matt in the mail today. Now in his Chevy he'll have DVD playback, Radio, CD, iPod and access to multiple different add-ons down the road! Ordered an Arc Audio XXD1500 mono block amp to match the XXD4080 4 channel amp that we put in the Yoda the first round. This should cut down the space taken up by the big Hifonics amp that was installed. Also, it will match the existing Arc Audio amp, and look much better since it'll be matched. Also, installing new tweets in the rear as well. New, bigger box for the Arc Audio XXD 10's...should do the trick!
Had an older Toyota in today.
Old Kenwood DVD player install with HD Radio upgrade, new speakers all around (Arc Audio), Arc Audio XXD 4080 4 channel amp to push the new speakers. Used his old Hifonic amp to push the new dual 10" XXD subs. Next phase is getting him a better amp (Arc Audio XXD mono block amp) as well as building him a new box to give the 10's more air. Check it out Everything is ordered and on it's way for phase one of Project Evo.
Alpine DVD player with built in Navigation, Bluetooth, Satellite Radio, and Backup Camera. Arc Audio Front and Rear Component Speakers all being powered by an Arc Audio KS 4 channel amp. Arc Audio Flatline 12" woofer being pushed by an Arc Audio 1000 watt mono amp. Plenty of fiberglass on it's way as well as all the cables and misc parts to put this thing together. Should be a good sounding system to compliment the fast car. Got the Elemental Designs 6.5" sub installed into Project Maxima last night. It sounds ok, more of a mid bass addition than anything. Not what I was hoping for, but for a free addition to the system, I thought it was a good add-on.
Worked on Project Melex last night for about 30 minutes. Got the tire off and did some 'custom' work to get it aired up again. By custom, I mean, Ryan sprayed the tire with brake cleaner and shot a stream of brake cleaner mixed with fire at it and BOOM, tire was aired up. Worked like a charm and didn't have to take it to a tire shop. All of this was of course supervised by Ben, whom had more experience in fixing tires that Ryan and I combined. Thanks Benny!! Had a customer call and needed new speakers installed. No Trax brands here, just your basic Pioneer replacement speakers. Rears went in without a problem (if you call taking half an hour to get to them 'not a problem', then ya). Once I got to the fronts, that's a little different story. As you can see in the pictures below, the front speakers (thank you GM) are way different than normal speakers. Usually, we play with circles or ovals, GM wanted to play with Spades! So, instead of using the factory spade adapter, since the speaker itself was built into it, I had to make my own, on the fly. It may look like just a piece of board, but I took careful consideration into the fact that the window and other harnesses needed to be cleared back there. All in all, it turned out great for the front stage.
After all the speakers were installed, I re-tuned his amp and sub and BOOM; system sounded great. Customer lived next to a cop, so I wasn't able to get his input on it, but I'm sure he'll love it. Enjoy! |
